Dove Holes Quarry is within in the boundaries of the Peak District National Park. There are numerous abandoned quarries in the surrounding area, each with the potential to be transformed. This project aims to support biodiversity and the absorption of carbon emissions by increasing medium-scale vegetation in the territory.
The quarry is reforested. Transformation starts with earth movement and soil regeneration, enabling small plants and animals to thrive. Over time, diverse and bigger species will naturalise the quarry.
Carboniferous limestone underlies the Peak District. Groundwater moves through fissure systems. In addition to limestone, strata is formed by top soil, millstone, coal, gritstone and shale.
Time is essential to the reforestation process. A successful ecosystem forms organically, in this case with human support and time.
Earth movement, soil regeneration and reforestation: All phases happen simultaneously in the first decade, after which endemic biodiversity continues to sustainably re-naturalise the environment.
