Inflow, Outflow: Beach Restoration & Surfing Destination

Project details

Programme
Studio Design Studio 1
Year 1

The Hayle Estuary is located in St Ives Bay, England. Hayle Beach, at the mouth of this estuary, is an ideal surfing location. Due to the interaction of tides and waves, the beach system has eroded and reduced in size; floating sediment from the eroded beach is carried into the inner channel, which causes the channel to silt up. This project focuses on reshaping the dune system to reduce beach erosion, and to provide surfers with a more stable beach and diverse surfing experience.

Research and simulations of waves and tides are the foundation of the project. A sustainable beach system and stable surfing conditions can be achieved through reconstruction of the internal beach topography and by controlling the waves in the shallow areas of the sea.
