By 2070, the old industrial area of Temple Meads in Bristol becomes a new ‘super cluster’ data and technology centre. The increase in technological facilities, urban density and rising temperatures cause urban Bristol to become a heavily-polluted urban heat island. The site now requires re-integration with nature through a process that aims to become self-sustaining.
The design focuses on the use of rising sea levels, increased rainfall and urban ecology to cool down the technology centre, provide wildlife habitat and create social spaces. Through the act of reassembling various landscape typologies, the project rethinks the relationship between urban and natural territories. It raises possibilities for integrating agriculture and forestry to provide sustainable growth, integrating the hydrosphere with urban fabric and introducing biodiversity to the urban environment. The project questions existing urban territories that are assembled solely by and for humans. It rethinks the possibilities of creating a symbiotic re-territorialisation with human and non-human elements.
