Many industrial sites border the Feiyun River; pollutants are discharged directly into the waterway, leading to poor water quality. This issue is compounded by the upper flow of the river that brings substantial amounts of sediment downstream, forming a high sediment content area. Surrounding this complex interaction of natural particulates and man-made pollution is a growing city that persistently converts its few remaining ecologically diverse riverbanks into densely-populated urban zones. All these issues combine to create a higher risk of flooding, and the city's only response up until now has been to develop hard dam structures to shield from floods and sea level rise.
This project presents an alternative future: A balancing act between the river and the land is proposed. By using planting and natural landforms to control sediment deposition, the riverbank is carefully expanded and an urban wetland landscape is created to act as a filter for the water, an active waterfront space for a growing city, and a natural and sustainable flood barrier.
Most of the banks along this river are artificial embankments, and a small part is natural farmland.
The three main elements designed for the wetland are the wetland ponds area, sedimentary islands and sustainable wetland agriculture.
