Xinbu Island is located in Haikou City, Hainan Province, China. It has undergone earth-shaking changes from 2003 to 2021, mainly due to artificial land reclamation, which nearly doubled the island’s area. This new land, however, did not have a positive impact on the lives of residents. On the contrary, it brought ecological degradation. The coastline has changed from a golden beach to a wide artificial breakwater, and the coastal beaches, originally home to various animals and plants, have gradually disappeared. During Typhoon Seagull in 2014, the government had to repair the hard flood embankment repeatedly; soon, it was ordered to stop constructing the large artificial island in the northeast of Xinbu Island.

This project aims to find a way to repair the damaged marine and riverine ecological environment, and identify a new development strategy for the future. This project hopes to enrich the daily lives of residents and undertake a series of positive landscape experiments to realise the sustainable development of the coastal area.
