Historically, the Fenhe River nourished the province of Shanxi, but modern industrialisation has severely polluted it and its ecosystem has progressively deteriorated. As it passes through the city of Taiyuan, its banks are heavily engineered, preventing the establishment of natural habitat for wildlife and rendering it inaccessible to local residents who have lost their close relationship to the river.
‘Floating Ecologies’ aims to restore these lost habitats and to improve water quality through a multi-functional aquatic landscape. The project focuses on two barren islands at the centre of the river which, over time, are transformed into nature reserves for migratory birds. One island provides a new pedestrian crossing route and birdwatching opportunities for local residents whilst the other remains out of reach to humans. A network of floating islands are constructed from waste collected from the river and come in multiple forms — rubbish collection systems, reed beds, protected nesting zones for birds, food sources for fish populations and bird watching hides.
The project provides an escape from the city for local residents whilst offering opportunities for wildlife. ‘Floating Ecologies’ pays tribute to the role the Fenhe has played in the development of Shanxi as the cradle of Chinese civilisation.
