Inspired by the many expansions of Hampstead Heath over the centuries, the project proposes a further extension, imagining an alternative future for the green spaces in Brent Cross by proposing a new green chain walk: ‘The Heath Hiking Route’. Clitterhouse Park is used as case study site to design a new heathland extension.
Design parameters were established for the site with an overarching ambition to restore a natural pedestrian and ecological corridor to Brent Reservoir, the River Brent and Hampstead Heath. The first strategy is to enhance the site's agricultural character, retaining and expanding existing allotments and city farm facilities. A series of new pedestrian routes and gathering spaces are delineated, connecting the park to surrounding landscapes and residential areas. New heathland planting zones, a pollinator meadow and wetland are introduced; a hidden tributary to the River Brent is de-culverted and channelled into the park.
Along with a rainwater collection system, the proposed hydrology provides irrigation for the new plantings and drinking water for the livestock. The proposal strives to demonstrate the potential of sheep grazing as a form of traditional landscape maintenance, softening the boundaries between humans and non-humans and offering opportunities for an augmented rural landscape in the city.
A new London Loop walk is proposed, starting at Hampstead Heath and passing through Brent Cross green spaces.
The project proposes an alternative future vision for Clitterhouse Park, building on the area's agricultural heritage and hidden waterways.
