The project is located in Xian Village, a typical urban village in the center of Guangzhou. It has not been demolished because many villagers refuse to become part of urbanisation. These villagers have been fighting with the government, hoping that their village can be preserved. In order to support the villagers' fight against urbanisation and the government, the project will be designed based on the villagers' suggestions to find a way that can preserve the village and beautify the urban environment.
To protect the farming culture here, the project will create an urban allotment with public participation, so that villagers can not only participate in agriculture in the city but also bond with others through farming. Agriculture is water intensive but Guangzhou is a city extremely short of freshwater. The project will create its own complete ecological water cycle, so that grey water and Pearl River water, purified in different ways, are rendered suitable for agriculture. The culture and customs of the village will be preserved along with the water landscape.
The design is divided into four areas. There are ponds with different functions in different areas to create a unique water system for the site.
Grey water and Pearl River water are filtered and transformed into nutrient-rich water for the planting platform.
Different colours represents different ponds. To the north is the community area, with a wetland to the south and planting in the middle.
Under the bridge was transformed from an empty gathering space to a sports facility. Wetland trees and aquatic plants filter the pond.
From the wetland area, you can see the great contrast between the old houses in Xian village and the tall buildings behind. From the planting platform you can see people building the community together.
