Co-Living Under the Woven Net

Project details

Programme
Supervisor Eva Branscome

Through the inheritance and transformation of historical elements, this project attempts to construct a feasible picture of future family life by establishing a comprehensive design from housing units to urban planning. The proposal is a game about boundary hierarchy: porous community planning under the tessellation method stimulates interaction of urban elements. The construction of spontaneity in a modular system — trying to build an open, unfinished construction system to achieve an “architecture without architects”, a kind of free-growing community — constitutes a criticism of the modern high-rise residential buildings lacking living atmosphere.

The change of family structure under the three-child policy alongside the Covid-19 pandemic inspire an analysis of the spatial typology of the original Chinese traditional intergenerational residence on the site. Under the theme of co-living in the courtyard, the isolation and interaction of individuals and collectives occur among the basic building units under the roof. The penetration of space by the city, community, family and people is realised layer by layer. From the site as a starting point, the project seeks a universality of collaborative solutions.
