Olympic Visions: Toward a Successful Urban Legacy

Project details

Student Yue Che
Programme
Supervisor Peter Bishop

What role do the Olympics play in establishing a vision for urban regeneration? How can cities create a successful Olympic legacy? In recent years, Beijing and London have been two frequently-cited Olympic cities; they use 'Olympic Vision' to promote urban redevelopment and leave a sustainable legacy via the Games.

Based on an analysis of the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics, this research places the two cities in a broader framework to understand the complicated role that hosting the Olympics plays in a city's growth. Through analysis and comparison, this research explores similarities and beneficial experiences between the two cities’ 'Olympic Visions' and legacies. While each city has its own unique culture and history, there are still similarities in advancing an Olympic Vision. Beijing and London demonstrate how they have adapted to their unique conditions and use forward thinking to promote their Olympic Visions.
