Re(-)Covered Sights of Belonging

Project details

Programme
Supervisor Hannah Corlett

In the form of an experiment, reflective walks are taken in Amman, the land of refugees, seeking to unlearn and re-learn constructs of belonging in a colonised urban fabric, and finding refuge within glimpses of nature as mountains reveal themselves between constructions. The journey pauses by a historic mosque in Marka, bounded by a flat park and shadowed by a mountain. A breather, idle.

Interweaving social, political, religious and ecological reflections, the journey is a tool to determine an inclusive design. The elevation of the hill and park is preserved through carving water veins that ripple down to an agriculture district, with private-public rainwater harvesting systems beneath and collective farming above producing clean water and healthy produce. The hydro-social design philosophy encourages ways of knowing land and water through charity-run drinking sources, stone gardens of transient communication, and mother-driven live/work dwellings. Self-sustenance facilitates autonomous economic gain while nurturing family-based collectivism in what could be a thriving Muslim society.

A tangible manifestation of detachment from capitalist enslavement, the design aims to re-awaken the sense of ownership, situating religiousness as a geopolitical potential to restore uncolonised modernity while reconciling the ephemeral relationship between the estranged native and nature.

Taking a Breather by Al-Fateh Mosque

The scenic landscape is a stranger in its own territory for being uninhabitable, unseen by dwellers that crave duller environs.

Site Observations

A sketch mapping the natural and man-made qualities of the hill and park.

Water-Bearing Spaces

In the agricultural district, secluded collective farm houses, mai sabil (charity-run drinking water sources), and private and public wells are sheltered by vine and stone gardens.

Contemplative Hill

The visitor centre extends from the rocky terrain humbly, without quarrying, featuring a water vein that quenches the hill as it flows down to the district.

Manifested Sights of Belonging

Views revealing the harmony of building from found material, blurring the fine distinction between the built and natural through time.
