Redefining Colonial History in Mudanjiang

Project details

Programme
Supervisor Guang Yu Ren

This project considers how to effectively combine historical heritage and urban development in contemporary post-colonial cities, using Mudanjiang as a specific example. The boundary of urban expansion and the attitude towards colonial historical heritage in Manchuria are discussed, whilst addressing problems of the site itself.

How to give new meaning to colonial heritage is an important issue to consider, especially in modern society. The project is an optimistic vision for revisiting the memory of China's Second World War colonial history. The design seeks to change attitudes toward a humiliating history. Adding new functions and meanings to these historical buildings helps retain significance and memory, whilst taking future development into consideration. People not only feel the solemn and stirring atmosphere of history, but also thrive in the glory of the new era.
