Haikou Qilou Old Street

Project details

Programme
Supervisor Guang Yu Ren

As a representative of the modern era in Haikou, the architecture of the Qilou building was designed to meet the socio-economic needs of the past. Despite its limitations for present-day use, the architectural model of the traditional Qilou building remains a guide to local architectural design today. This project examines local culture, economic and business models, and architectural practices of Haikou to identify links between traditional architectural models and contemporary architecture.

A study of the Qilou Old Streets of Haikou is used to analyse the design strategies for public spaces in the context of the coexistence of commercial and residential modes. The main focus is on how to improve the public space in a historic district with a combination of commercial and residential uses, so that visitors and residents can live together in harmony.
